Laurence Harbor Fire Department Promotes Longtime Member to Lieutenant Role
Laurence Harbor Fire Department (LHFD) is thrilled to announce that it has kicked off 2023 by promoting firefighter Christopher Buffi to 2nd Lieutenant.
“We are very excited to promote Chris,” said LHFD Chief Brian Stitzel. “He is highly qualified for this role and we have all the confidence in his skills and leadership abilities.”
A New Leader
Buffi joined LHFD in November 2004 and has served with the department for a total of 15 years, including a previous stint as 2nd Lt. He moved to another area for a few years in between and served with its local fire department — upon returning he rejoined LHFD as an engineer.
“I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience while leading the members on and off the foreground,” he said.
He is proud of his accomplishments and that other members of the department have confidence in his abilities.
“It felt good to know that the members of the department trusted me to lead them as an officer,” he said.
There many aspects of fire service that inspire him, most importantly knowing that the department helps save people from what could be a tragic situation.
“To show up to help in a time of need and know that you being there is making someone’s very bad day more tolerable is highly satisfying,” he said.
Rescue on the Water
At Laurence Harbor, members must be trained on water rescue and operating water rescue vehicles. The department serves popular shore towns and has its own beach community; therefore, it typically has a variety of water emergency calls in the warmer months. Rescue and fire suppression drills are held annually, typically early in the summer.
One of Buffi’s most memorable calls was a water rescue. A sail boat with two men on board lost engine power and was anchored in the bay during a storm. Buffi anchored one of the department’s boats — Marine 1 — into position and other members were able to bring the two men to safety.
“The look of relief on their faces once they were safe on the dock was incredible,” he said. “You could tell they were extremely thankful that we showed up to help them.”
The department has two boats – Marine 1, which is a 23-foot center console boat used for water rescue and fire suppression, and Marine 2, a 16-foot AB boat used for water rescue only.
A Call for Volunteers
There are many ways to help as a volunteer firefighter, and Buffi encourages others to jump into the action to serve the community and also make new connections.
“Whether it is helping to pull hose lines, grabbing equipment off the truck, or entering a building, there is always something to be done on a fire scene,” he said. “And besides the new skills that you’ll gain, you’ll also gain a second family that is always there for you.”
Laurence Harbor Fire Department is seeking motivated individuals to join as volunteer firefighters. Volunteers can expect to participate in training sessions and contribute to administrative duties across the department. Visit
